INTERIOR DESIGNER Q&A
What are some of your favorite things about this project?
“I absolutely love the look and feel of the Modern Mine design style.”
You defined Modern Mine in Part 4 of this blog series. Can you remind us of the basics?
“Modern Mine design is a reinterpretation of structures found at iconic mining claims of the Old West. Common elements include tall mineshafts, industrial metal details, timber framing, and other rustic finishes that reflect the rough-hewn history of Colorado. The design and color palette often hint at traditional mining structures, but with a clean, modern aesthetic.”
“Modern Mine uses a mix of raw, natural materials with lots of texture – like real stone veneer, metals with patina, rough woods and thick timbers. The color palette often feels slightly moody and reminiscent of old mining buildings.”
What progress is the team making on the Modern Mine exterior?
“The beautiful, unfinished live-edge siding will be stained an aged gray to look as though it’s been weathered over the years.”
“The corrugated metal siding has a rust-look patina.”
“And the color and texture of the dark gray stone veneer will complement the wood timber posts and beams once stained.”
How does the interior reflect the Modern Mine style?
“We’re using many of the same exterior materials, finishes and applications in the home’s interior for design continuity.”
“For example, this accent wall of the master suite is clad in the same live-edge siding.”
“And the ceiling beams are a mix of timbers and metal I-beams.”
“To balance the rustic ‘mine’ elements, modern finishes include sleek plumbing and light fixtures, smooth drywall texture, and drywall-wrapped windows with black frames.”
Which design features, materials or finishes do you personally love the most?
“David and Sherry were so open to unique and creative design elements, there are many features I love.”
The kitchen island in progress
“The kitchen island design is at the top of my list of favorites for sure. It’s so unique and completely custom for this house. A quick sketch shows how we plan to insert rough-hewn timbers into I-beam posts that will be visible through the smooth solid surface countertop.”

“The fireplace will be such a grand focal point, and I love the mix of stone and metal panels wrapping all four sides.”
The bunk room in progress
“On the lower level, the bunk room will be an amazing space where the boys and their friends can hang out.”
“The steps to the lower bunks also serve as cabinet drawers for added storage.”
“A ladder to the upper bunks will eventually hang over a series of open floating shelves.”
“A platform with deep drawers, and access to open shelving, create a cozy reading nook tucked under the stairs.”
“Even the guest bedroom has custom built-in cabinets to maximize storage.”
Anything else you want to add about the home’s interior design?
“When I think back to the interior design process and working with Sherry and David, one word comes to mind: connection.”

“Sherry and David’s connection to family, their involvement in the community, and the connection to the land where we’re building their custom home is awe-inspiring. It’s been so rewarding to have a hand in helping design a forever home where the family can connect with each other and nature.”

“One other detail that speaks to the family’s connection to the land is a custom metal railing we’re having locally fabricated. It represents a topo map of the lake where David went hunting and fishing as a boy, and where he will make new memories with his sons.”
“It’s always inspiring to work with clients who are excited and open to creativity with their design.”
“Working with David and Sherry has been so rewarding, and I’m thrilled to be part of bringing their mountain home to life.”
Stay tuned to this blog series as we add final touches and tour the finished custom home.
