Reclaim Your Calm with Organized Spaces

January is a fresh start to the calendar year, when many of us resolve to make positive changes in our lives. The desire to get organized is at the top of most lists, and for good reason.

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, discovered that a cluttered home can cause measurable stress — enough to impair mood and disrupt sleep. Their study “Life at Home in the Twenty-First Century” also revealed the opposite to be true: decluttering a home has the power to lower cortisol levels and improve our sense of well-being.

In other words, getting organized is good for your health!

If you’re on a mission to improve your life, and the lives of those you love, check out the following organized spaces for inspiration.

Organized Kitchens

There are few rooms that reveal clutter more than a Scandinavian kitchen. The clean countertops and open shelves ask us to be highly selective about what stays, and fairly ruthless about what goes.

Vertical pull-out drawers in this Loveland kitchen remodel help organize essential tools — placing them at the cook’s fingertips as they make dinner on the burners above.

Built-in dividers in base cabinets (left) make it easier to store and find flat baking sheets. Pull-out drawers (center) provide full access to items, and keep trash and recycling (right) tucked away out of sight.

When square footage is tight, special cabinetry — like this ingenious toe-kick drawer — can help utilize every inch of available space for organization and storage.

If you have the space, a walk-in pantry is a great way to keep the main kitchen tidy. It’s the perfect place to store shelf-stable food, awkward appliances, party supplies, and seldom-used platters and dishes — all behind a closed door.

A second refrigerator and freezer in the pantry are indispensable during a party, and allow you to store more fresh food for a growing family. It also opens up shelf space in the main fridge, making it easier to organize, view and use perishable items in a timely manner.

Organized Creative Spaces

The craft room in this Fort Collins basement remodel is a scrapbooker’s dream.

And because every item has its place, the space is a cinch to keep clean and organized.

Having a dedicated craft room also keeps the mess off the dining room table or kitchen island, where projects can take over for long periods of time.

If you don’t have the square footage for a full craft room, consider carving out a smaller niche for a creative workspace like we did in this Fort Collins basement remodel.

One of the biggest traps for clutter is a rarely used room. Without a clear purpose, and because the space is largely ignored, these rooms can become staging areas for growing piles of items we should either put away or toss. Why not turn the stagnant space into a room you love? In this Fort Collins remodel, we repurposed our clients’ unused formal dining room into an art gallery to showcase their prized collection of Japanese art.

Now that the room has a clear, meaningful purpose, our clients are highly motivated to keep it clutter-free. They love the calm, orderly gallery, which adds joy to their lives and their home.

Organized Offices

This small but mighty home office in Loveland includes a desk and multi-purpose wall storage. The space is fresh, neat and welcoming.

In this Timnath remodel, our team created his-and-her desks in a shared office. To help with organization, we included plenty of storage for each of the workspaces.

Double barn doors allow our clients to close their office when needed, yet the cathedral windows and shared peninsula encourage the couple to keep their desks tidy.

Organized Mudrooms and Laundry Rooms

Located right off the garage, this combination mudroom and laundry room invites order in a busy household, catching any tracked-in mess before it enters the main living area of the home.

When these two rooms are combined, it creates an invaluable utility space — making home organization a daily practice, not a chore, for the entire family.

This mudroom-laundry combo provides wall hooks, cabinets, drawers, and cubbies for individual storage. The generous bench makes it easy to remove and store shoes and boots.

Its location off the garage is efficient and convenient, capturing coats, backpacks and other outdoor gear as family members and guests enter the home. Duffle bags with dirty uniforms or workout clothes get dropped at the washing machine, rather than carried through the house and forgotten in a bedroom.

The updated laundry room in this Livermore remodel includes a utility sink, storage cabinets, pull-out drying racks, and a space-saving folding table drawer for added convenience.

In addition to keeping family members organized, this mudroom serves as a warm, dry space for our clients’ dog Oro. A dog door allows Oro to come and go between his indoor space and his dog run outside.

Our team also installed a cozy custom den for Oro’s soft bed.

The counter-height top of this built-in curved cabinetry also provides a sturdy, flat surface to set a handbag or groceries when unloading from the car.

Managing the dirty gear, shedding hair, and muddy paws for one dog can be a challenge, let alone four ! No surprise, the owners of Falcor, Astro, Blue, and Leo were eager to contain the mess and clutter of their beloved pets.

To help them do this, our team created a dog-friendly mudroom for their adorable pack, complete with dog wash, leash hooks, and storage cubbies to keep the pooches clean and their accessories organized.
